ABOUT BRUM OUTLOUD

Who We Are.
How We Report.

An independent LGBTQ+ publication for the people who already live the scene.

Brum Outloud is an independent LGBTQ+ publication covering Birmingham. We run a continuously updated guide to every queer venue and event in the city, alongside a small library of editorial features on Birmingham's scene, history and community. We're based in Birmingham, edited from Birmingham, and written by people who actually go out here. Email hello@brumoutloud.co.uk for tips, corrections, or to get a venue or event listed.

What we do

A what's-on, every day. The events feed lists every queer night and LGBTQ+ event we know about in Birmingham — bars, clubs, cabaret, theatre, brunches, community meet-ups. Submitted by promoters, surfaced by us, kept current.

A guide to the venues. The venues directory covers every LGBTQ+ bar, club and cabaret room in the city, with what each is good for and who turns up. Plus deeper guides to the Gay Village, Birmingham Pride, and drag shows.

A small library of features. Slow-published, long-life editorial on Birmingham's queer scene, history and culture. Live in the Features section.

Why we exist

Birmingham's LGBTQ+ scene is one of the oldest and largest in the country, and it has spent decades being underestimated — by the rest of Britain, and sometimes by Birmingham itself. The Nightingale Club opened the year sex between men was partly decriminalised. The UK's first LGBTQ+ community centre opened on Bordesley Street in 1976. Birmingham held a Pride weekend in 1972. None of this is on the national tourist trail.

We're here to make the scene easier to find, easier to use, and harder to overlook — the directory people actually need, and the editorial Birmingham deserves.

How we report

Insider voice

We write like people who go to these places, because we do. No tourist-board polish, no AI-generated filler — direct, opinionated, sourced.

Verify against sources

Every named fact has a source we can point to. Where a claim is community-attested but not independently verified, we say so. When we don't know, we don't pretend.

Independent

Editorial is not for sale. Venues and events are listed on merit, not payment. Sponsorships and ads, where they appear, are labelled.

Community-first

We serve readers, not advertisers. That means listing the bar most people actually start the night in, even when it's not the one paying for ads.

Evergreen-led

Features are a library, not a treadmill. We'd rather publish nothing than publish something thin. News folds in when it has weight.

Plainly Birmingham

We make the case on Birmingham's own strengths — not by tearing other cities down. Manchester and Brighton get one mention apiece, at most.

Corrections

If you find a factual error on Brum Outloud, email hello@brumoutloud.co.uk with the URL and what's wrong. We respond within a working week and we fix what we can verify is wrong. Material corrections to feature pieces are noted in the article; small typos and listing updates are corrected silently.

Closed venues, defunct events, broken links — also welcome. We'd rather know.

Our community

Birmingham is a majority-minority city — 51.4% of its people are of Black, Asian or minority-ethnic heritage — and queer Birmingham reflects every community in it. We cover the whole scene, intentionally: the Gay Village, the South Asian queer support network, the Deaf LGBTQ+ groups, the lesbian and trans organisers and venues, the events that don't get mainstream press attention.

If a part of the scene isn't covered the way you think it should be, tell us. It's the only way it gets better.
